From West Coast Writers (Winter 2011)
As usual, CAA members are busy writing and promoting their work.
Margo Bates is working on a new book called The Funeral Follower. She's also fine-tuning her workshops, What a Character and others.
Dennis E. Bolen performed his new work Anticipated Results with musician Soresa Gardiner at the VPL Central Branch on September 14. Dennis also took part in the Vancouver International Writers and Readers' Festival, held October 18–21 on Granville Island. View the YouTube trailer for his book, Anticipated Results.
Anthony Dalton and Bernice Lever gave a talk on Public Lending Rights and Access Copyright at Word on the Street at the VPL, September 26.
Patricia Donahue was featured author at the 65th Anniversary of the West Vancouver Library. Her latest novel is Mighty Orion-Fate (Borealis Press).
Joyce Goodwin and Robert W. Mackay took part in a Remembrance Day reading at The Silver Harbour Seniors' Centre in North Vancouver. Joyce's story honoured the Canadian soldiers who liberated Holland and in particular Amsterdam, where her Dutch mother spent the war years. Joyce also contributed her poem "Orchid" to the North Shore Writers' Assn. Annual Anthology (printed on page 7 of West Coast Writers Winter 2011).
Sandra Harper says hello from Nairobi, where she raised a glass in honour of our Christmas luncheon, which she had to miss.
Georgia Hunter has published a new YA book called Yubi and the Blue-tailed Rat.
Jean Kay continues to spread her poetry far and wide. Her poem called "Friendship" was recited at a luncheon at the KinVillage Recreation Centre. Two other poems were published in Spirit Eyes and Fireflies, the 2011 Anthology of the Ontario Poetry Society. Jean's laminated Book Mark poems were used as community gratitude gifts for the Little House Society in South Delta. Jean also wrote a poem for Jan Furst (printed on page 11 of West Coast Writers Winter 2011), which she read at his celebration of life. She enjoyed her volunteering job at SIWC.
Bernice Lever has recently contributed to Cake, the Silverbow Anthology, the Prairie Journal, Ascent Aspirations, and Verse Afire. She provided sessions and Blue Pencil Services at the Kamloops Writers' Fair in November. Bernice continues to offer her services as our writer-in-residence. Query her if you have work you'd like looked at.
Dennis E. Bolen and Robert W. Mackay were invited to read at the Giller Light Bash at W2 Café, 111 West Hastings. While readers and audience awaited the announcement of the Giller Prize, which went to Esi Edugyan for Half-Blood Blues, a good time was had by all.
Jim McWilliams is looking for a writing group in Surrey, where he lives.
Sheila Martindale's Inauspicious Events will be presented at Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria on December 11 at 2:00 p.m. Her script was chosen from a city-wide competition for a drama reflecting the theme Christmas in the City. Sheila has also had several poems, articles and book reviews published in recent issues of The Diocesan Post.
Ben Nuttall-Smith was given a special award at The Surrey International Writers' Conference. He also read on November 30 at The North Delta Writers' Reading Series. Ben's recent novel Blood, Feathers and Holy Men is now available in e-book form, ISBN 978-1-4659-9624-4.
Patrick Taylor reports that A Dublin Student Doctor, sixth in his Irish Country series, was published October 11 and went straight to New York Times hardback fiction list at Number 26. An Irish Country Village goes to mass market paperback in January, and An Irish Country Courtship will be out in Trade paperback in February.
Carol Tulpar took part in a reading at the Rhizome Café on September 8, part of a monthly series put on by TWS, The Writers Studio at Simon Fraser University. Her essay "The Soldier and the Angel" appeared in Emerge 2011. The TWS anthology was launched October 22.
Perry Wilson has a new book out, Hubris: A Charity Deacon Investigation. The Kindle version is available in e-book format from her author page.
