"Just Mary" Reader: Mary Grannan, Selected Stories

Cover of 'Just Mary' Reader: Mary Grannan, Selected Stories

I would like to thank Kirk Howard, the President of the Dundurn Group, for his initiative in proposing the "Just Mary" Reader as a companion book to the biography. This new book presents a collection of Mary Grannan's radio and television scripts that are appearing in print for the first time. They are drawn from three radio series—Just Mary, The Land of Supposing, and Jubilee Road—and the television series, Maggie Muggins, with broadcast dates ranging from 1947 to 1962.

The Just Mary scripts, which were narrated on radio by Mary Grannan herself, are naturally in a narrated story form. However, the remaining scripts are the actual dramatic scripts for radio and television plays. This script form permits some unique opportunities not offered by Mary's books published in her lifetime, whose stories were all adapted into a narrated form. Firstly, the scripts offer the opportunity for school groups and others to put on Mary Grannan plays. Secondly, they allow students of radio and television arts to examine scripts of children's broadcasting from this time period. Previously, these scripts of Mary's were available only in archives. Finally, they will permit a more detailed examination of what I feel was Mary Grannan's greatest writing strength—writing for broadcast.

The University of New Brunswick, as holder of Mary's copyright, is dedicating its proceeds from this book, as well as all proceeds from her copyright, to the Mary E. Grannan Scholarship in English Literature.

Happy reading!
