Too serious and cool a teen to write comedy, I eventually cracked a smile. In the 60s, I saw the insanity of the Serious: pop groups singing anti-Vietnam while military industrialists stockpiled enough missiles to kill every earthling. Black comedy was In. Performing poetry and song with an old guitar; I simply liked people's laughter. Laughter is like harmony in music.

Later medical school fed wit and irony. As Meditoban's editor, I wrote much humor, then in rural practice, later as psychiatrist and addiction specialist. No doubt I've a genetic flaw, accepting Darwin's "chimpanzees", needing humour.

Also I absorbed Woody Allen's relationship advice. Marriages begun as charming Bronte meets Lawrence romances somehow became today's soap operas. Naturally I returned to church for what God thought was so funny. Work and relationships demand comic relief; spirituality: a light heart.

Getting pets and a sailboat clinched it; my writing profits quickly swallowed by vets, boat maintenance. Critters are hilarious while sailboats are daily humility lessons. You must laugh at yourself. So I'm writing humor, pleased that people laugh at my peanut butter reality slices.
